During the period 2004-2009, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein provided funding of €672 million through the EEA Grants, while Norway provided an additional €635 million through the Norway Grants. The total contribution amounted to € 1.3 billion and was allocated for the implementation of 1188 projects, programs and funds, which were managed by public and private sector bodies, NGOs and research and academic institutions in 15 countries in Central and Southern Europe. The implementation of the funded projects, programs and funds lasted until April 2011.

Cyprus received grants amounting to €4.7 million, of which € 1.26 million came from the EEA Financial Mechanism and € 3.4 million from the Norwegian Financial Mechanism. This sum was used for the implementation of 5 projects in total:

• Revitalizing the buffer zone: An Educational Center and Home for Cooperation
• Preparation of an Integrated Management Plan for the Pafos Forest, in Cyprus
• Cyprus Archaeological Digitisation Program - CADiP
• Restoration of Salamiou village old school building, for use as a regional center for environmental education
• A zero CO2 emissions electricity generation prototype (ZeroCO2).
